Unlike some of the other reviews, I'm not bothered by the cost. These are Veblen goods, for the most part, and logic doesn't play much a role in pricing.
Overall it's shame, because I love the way the looks and feels, but I based on what I've experienced -- I don't recommend it. So if you are even considering this pen you should have already done some research and know if this is the right one for you.
This is a fantastic pen and you pay a serious premium for it, and determining its worth will be tricky based on your situation.
If you're looking for the Montblanc name and the status is brings, there are cheaper options. What I like about this particular pen is the right people will notice it, and those are the people I care about impressing.
This is a very thick pen, and I don't carry it on a daily basis, but I carry it during all our meetings and it always gains a lot of attention.
If you want a montblanc as a daily driver, Id recommend a star walker. If you want the quintessential montblanc experience, this is the one to get.
If you want to give a VERY impressive gift, you can not go wrong. This is one of the best fountain pens in the world and I have anticipated owning one for perhaps 30 years.

I see some rather sketchy feedback on this pen and cannot understand why. This pen, albeit expensive, writes wonderfully and has accolades the world round.
I love MontBlanc writing instruments. Their craftsmanship is amazing. I have large hands so I prefer a larger pen as it is more comfortable for me.
If you have small hands this pen may be an issue for you as this is the largest pen MontBlanc makes. A truly great pen! Really need to use it regularly to appreciate it.
The Mont Blanc is considered to be the flagship pen in the Mont Blanc's regular fountain pen stable. This is their largest pen, although some limited edition pens may exceed the dimensions of the MB The pen is of a very conservative design which has been copied by many Japanese and Chinese pen manufacturers.
The pen is an icon of both in design and function. So how does this pen write? Excellent as far as I am concerned. These are not the smoothest nibs out there.
Include Caran d'Ache and S. Dupoint pen with the Carenes. That said, the MB is a very smooth writing pen indeed. But the MB provides a certain tactile feedback through the nib that I really do like and even enjoy - sometime even more than these other smoother writing pens, and at other times less so.
The MB uses the largest nib size in the Mont Blanc inventory. The large 9 size nib is a mite bit over an inch in length.
It is made of 18K. The pen itself is quite wide due to the diameter of the pen which is over half an inch wide.
What the manufacturer calls precious resin is actually a cheap plastic which is Mont Blanc claims is a trade secret. Resin is a byproduct of highly viscous liquid secretions of plants or trees - which is not what the MB pens are made out of.
The cheap plastic is known to crack upon being dropped from table height or greater. Before purchasing this pen give some thought to the actual maintenance of this pen.
These pens are not user serviceable and even just cleaning the MB is a pain in the posterior. The only way to clean this pen out is to screw in the piston in and out several times over and over and over again until it runs clear.
There is no way around this: neither the nib nor the piston can be removed to so that water can be used to flush out the pen easily.
Unlike the many other pens, the MB pens lose their value relatively quickly compared to Pelikans and Watermans.
Oftentimes one can get these ink encrusted pens for a third to a quarter of the price of a new MB. Again here your will need to send this out to Mont Blanc to get it serviced before you can write with it.
And yes, it is going to cost you time and money to have Mont Blanc restore it for you. So how can you mitigate future problems and help your cause?
Stay away from the highly saturated inks of the Private Reserve and Noodler's line. These inks are brighter, deeper and more vivid for a reason, higher saturated dyes - which is a bad thing when it comes to Mont Blanc pens for two reasons: first your will spend a very, very long time getting the pen running clear when cleaning the pen, secondly, the dyes can cause encrustation as the nib dries out and the dye will precipitate as the water content evaporates.
This will slowly lead to the pen accumulating and you will have to eventually send it to Mont Blanc for maintenance. Please stay away from the pigment bassed inks such as the Sailor Jentle inks and J.
Herbin Rouge Hermatite. Furthermore, due to the rigors of the cleaning process your should not be looking forward to changing inks in this pen.
Keep in mind that some inks should not be mixed with other inks, hence the reason to wash out the pen thoroughly before using a different ink even if it is the same color.
Again, due to the tedious cleaning process changing inks is a headache. So, stay with one ink and leave it at that.
Run water through your pen monthly and set it to dry. Again, due to the inability to blow out the water content out of the pen and feed you are not going to be able to get the water out of the feed system.
Those are the only inks I will use in these pens. The Waterman ink is well known as an ink with excellent qualities - this would be my first recommendation for this pen.
Looking purely as a fountain pen, the Mont Blanc is a very good pen approaching excellent. But then anyone can craft a very good pen at a certain price point.
What your are in reality paying is for the snob appeal of owning a Mont Blanc and brandishing it under their noses of your peers and underlings as a sign that your can afford to pay an exorbitant price that otherwise would be a somewhat ordinary pen.
Remember that the cost of maintaining the pen over time is an investment for Mont Blanc - not you. In my opinion, the Pelikan flagship pens M and M are better made pens and are available at a far lesser price.
The Pelikan pens are very easy to clean. Nib and piston can be easily taken apart. You can even perform maintenance on the piston greasing etc , very much user serviceable pen.
There is a Chinese manufacturer which makes counterfeit MB pens which are very close copies which requires the eye of an expert to detect.
There are also a pen sold by Amazon as a MB which looks nothing like a MB which is being warehoused and shipped by Amazon. Even after numerous complaints Amazon.
