Although the main goal of the experiment was to test and gather data for cybernetics, unknown to Kuriba the other researchers hoped to observe a side-effect - the creation of a soul.

The result was the Doppelganger , a mechanical duplicate made from the removed cybernetics who believed herself to be the original Kuriba Ryouko.

After finding out about the Doppelganger and with her colleagues too absorbed in their apparent success to consider the potential risks, Kuriba disseminated Indian Poker as a way to find a solution to the problem while working to finish the cybernetics to save her mother.
