I think I actually liked watching it more now than I did even as a kid when it came out. The film brilliantly mixes ample humor from beginning to end, with more serious subjects - parental loss and estrangement, urban decay, inner city crime etc.
Our heroes are also caught in the dichotomy of being both benefactors and outcasts from society. There are moments that are heartwarming and funny, and yet others that are tortured and anguished.
This film is by far the highlight of the entire series. While the later films went with a more cartoonish, kid friendly tone - this film stays true to the dark atmosphere of the comics, while still having plenty of good natured humor.

Cartoon to movie adaptations usually stink, but not this one, it blends both elements of the comic book and the cartoon 70 percent comic and the other 30 the cartoon , making the perfect balance of light and darkness for a good old fashioned family flick!
The costumes, developed by the master puppeteer Jim Henson still look convincingly real, move fluidly, and are able to express themselves with grace unparalleled.
Of course what good is all that if you don't have good performances to back it all up? The actors both in suit and voice all deliver, especially with Corey Feldman a Goonie!
The story is well written with a great theme that all parents care for their children even when it isn't obvious. The fights are nicely choreographed and in rhythm.
