He decides to purchase the new OS1, which is advertised as the world's first artificially intelligent operating system, "It's not just an operating system, it's a consciousness," the ad states.
Theodore quickly finds himself drawn in with Samantha, the voice behind his OS1. As they start spending time together they grow closer and closer and eventually find themselves in love.
Having fallen in love with his OS, Theodore finds himself dealing with feelings of both great joy and doubt.
As an OS, Samantha has powerful intelligence that she uses to help Theodore in ways others hadn't, but how does she help him deal with his inner conflict of being in love with an OS?
Written by Bob Philpot. This is the best film I have seen all year, and I saw just about every good film to hit theaters in I think it's because it is so representational of what it's like to be human.
There are so many things that make this movie special, but I'll just mention a few. The music paired with the beautiful sound design make you FEEL the movie.
Sure, you see everything on the screen, which is already beautiful, but then that music hits you and the emotions just start to run. I laughed, I cried, my brain got all tingly.
It was an emotional roller coaster, and the score assisted in that so well. The script. I knew how this movie was going to end 30 minutes in.
And unlike most who would then say that it's predictable and not worth watching, I consider that awesome, because it means that the script is tight enough to tell a good story with a believable arc.
Every scene in this movie is straight up powerful! Like it will fill your heart with sadness and happiness and pain and guilt and confusion.
And then rinse and repeat. For 2 hours. It moves through all of the most complex and interesting questions that we should be asking ourselves about what it means to be a human being.
About what it means to be alive. This film is about all that life is. And after the screening, as well as during, I found myself questioning things in my own life that either don't make sense or don't have to make sense.
Like love and thoughts and emotions. They're all so natural and yet none of us truly understand how they work.
In my opinion, moreso than any other film this year, Her has the perfect mix of complex ideas, story, and character development.
One of the best scripts ever written. My personal favorite shot to see and use is the extreme close up. And that shot was all over this movie.
The reason I love it so much and believe it works so well is because it allows you to see the emotions of the character so plainly.
Like their face is right in your face, so you just have to look at it. And that's where Joaquin shines. He delivers such a powerful and emotional performance and the close ups are there to capture it all.
They also make great use of the natural backlighting of Shanghai, and the colors all fuse to make it a really pretty movie. It looks like every shot was photographed with the intent to make it the most beautiful shot in the film.
And I admire the DP's work. He did a really great job. More than anything though, this film just made me feel.
Everything about it was so beautiful. I didn't want it to end. I felt like the film was controlling me - playing with my mind as if it were a joystick.
And that's just something you don't get every day. Very rarely am I awe- stricken by a movie, and this film made my jaw drop. It is without a doubt the best film of the year, and upon just one viewing, one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time.

At times it borders on terrifyingly awkward and attempts to pose a desperately hopeless romantic story that is at times frightening and intimate.
It's such a clever film, the only reason why it doesn't have five stars is that I felt the film was a bit overlong and seemed to drag a bit towards the end and whilst I was still gripped more or less I did start feeling slightly bored as the film's dreamy pace can become a tad monotonous and depressing towards the end.
Joaquin Phoenix gives a fantastically mature stand out performance, probably the best acting I've seen from him in a long time and Scarlett Johansson's voice work is great as it was in the Jungle Book also.
Weirdly enough, a strong supporting performance comes from Olivia Wilde who has about 15 minutes of screen time but manages to really shine in that time.
Harry W Super Reviewer. Jun 05, This was such a great film. There's really nothing quite like this film out there and I couldn't be happier that I took the time to watch this.
Worth checking out if you're even remotely interested. Stephen S Super Reviewer. Feb 18, In the not-too distant, easily relatable future, a man falls in love with his cell phone's operating system.
The film's biggest feat is how that does not seem far fetched at all and how natural this development feels.
Even as a viewer it's easy to fall in love with Johansson's voice and her joyful personality. Phoenix, who carries most of the film in his conversations with her, delivers a great performance too.
Their chemistry is so enchanting and interesting the film requires little more than well-written dialogs to tell its story.
Sadly, the final act fails to deliver a real punchline, the emphasis on emotions and refusal the get into technological aspects of the development took me out of the story a bit.
The result is still deeply fascinating, also thanks to the outstanding production design of future L.
Jens S Super Reviewer. Jan 14, Now as for starters, I am not a big fan of Spike Jonze's pictures. They come off as too weird or too alienating for many "Being John Malkovich" anyone?
Funnily, "Her" isn't much of a departure in comparison to Jonze's earlier work, but it is, without a doubt, his most captivating. Let's be real: "Gravity" was just unreal.
Quite possibly one of the greatest shot films ever crafted. Well, after being nearly 1 year late watching this movie, I could say, "Her" would sure as hell won for best cinematography if "Gravity" never fell on our laps.
It is a gorgeous movie to behold. Colors pop with soft textures throughout but tiptoed in with a subtle melancholy tone.
But even though the cinematography was vibrant, boy, Joaquin Phoenix plays an absolutely magnetic and nuanced performance. I don't care about his past troubles; this guy's talented.
Now I've never seen Matthew's best acting performance in "Dallas Buyer's Club" to rightfully say whether his performance in that was any better than Phoenix's in "Her", but in no way should Phoenix be thrown in the back burner.
His performance is a work of art. Without a doubt, "Her" is more of a quiet piece so you won't find much dialogue here ala "Lost in Translation", but Jonze doesn't impose this method in a swaggering way -- he portrays it with perfection.
Emotions such as sadness, laughter, the sense of hope, the desire of love, and confusion are exceedingly palpable but not so much in a way that it's thrown in audiences faces -- it gracefully settles in, making the movie not so much of a viewing but more of an experience.
There's no way these emotions would have been portrayed if Jonze didn't utilize the method that he inhabits with this flick.
To put it in one word, the film as a whole is beautiful. It's a film crafted and paced so superbly, there seems to be no wrong note Jonze plays with this film.
Bravo, Spike Jonze. Everything from the melancholy tone, to the symbolic imagery, to the captivating and infectious narrative, "Her" was a huge surprise for me.
Without a doubt was "12 Years a Slave" the big winner for best picture, but "Her" comes in at a close 2nd or 3rd for me.
Fair warning though: "Her" is a bit unsettling and it will leave people extremely weirded out, but "Her" is downright arresting.
Albert K Super Reviewer. See all Audience reviews. Samantha: Honey, I'm home. Theodore Twombly: No. Don't do this. You don't turn this around on me.
You're the one that's being selfish. We're in a relationship. Samantha: But's the heart not like a box that gets filled up. Pictures acquiring distribution rights.
Jonze's long-time director of photography , Lance Acord , was not available to work on the movie.
In his place, Jonze hired Hoyte Van Hoytema. So we recast and since then Scarlett has taken over that role. Eric Zumbrunnen and Jeff Buchanan served as the film's editors.
Zumbrunnen stated that there was "rewriting" in a scene between Theodore and Samantha, after Theodore goes on a blind date. He explained that their goal in the scene was to make it clear that "[Samantha] was connecting with [Theodore] and feeling for him.
You wanted to get the sense that the conversation was drawing them closer. This was not the final version of the film, but it assisted Jonze in removing unnecessary sub-plots.
Consequently, a supporting character played by Chris Cooper that was the subject of a documentary within the film was removed from the final cut.
Several scenes included fictional video games; these sequences were developed by animation artist David OReilly. His work on the film inspired him to explore developing his own video games, eventually leading to his first title, Mountain.
The score for the film was credited to Arcade Fire , with additional music by Owen Pallett. Arcade Fire's Will Butler and Pallett were the major contributors.
The melody for the song from the same album, called "Porno", can also be heard during the soundtrack. The soundtrack has not been released in digital or physical form, and Warner Bros.

The site's critical consensus reads, "Sweet, soulful, and smart, Spike Jonze's Her uses its just-barely-sci-fi scenario to impart wryly funny wisdom about the state of modern human relationships.
Rolling Stone ' s Peter Travers awarded the film three and a half stars out of four and particularly praised Johansson's performance, stating that she "speaks Samantha in tones sweet, sexy, caring, manipulative and scary" and that her "vocal tour de force is award-worthy".
He also went on to call Jonze "a visionary". That he does, with subtle grace and depth. McCarthy examined the premise of the story and suggested that the film's central virtual relationship was better than Ryan Gosling 's character's relationship with a sex doll in Lars and the Real Girl.
McCarthy compares the "tender" and "vulnerable" performance of Phoenix to his "fearsome" performance in The Master. He also praised Jonze's writing for its insights into what people want out of love and relationships, as well as the acting performances that "[make] it all feel spontaneous and urgent.
Richard Roeper said that the film was "one of the more original, hilarious and even heartbreaking stories of the year" and called Phoenix "perfectly cast".
She further praised the film for being "inventive, intimate and wryly funny". However, Lacey also stated that Phoenix's performance was "authentically vulnerable", but that "his emotionally arrested development also begins to weigh the film down.
He also opined that the film was "a lot more interesting to think about than watch. Jones of the Chicago Reader gave the film 2 out of 4 stars, praising the performances of Phoenix and Johansson, but also criticizing Phoenix's character, calling him an "idiot".
He also criticized the lack of realism in the relationship between Phoenix and Johansson's characters. However, she also praised Johannson's performance, calling it "the movie's saving grace" and stating that Her "isn't just unimaginable without Johansson—it might have been unbearable without her.
Her was listed on many critics' top ten lists. Her has earned various awards and nominations, with particular praise for Jonze's screenplay.
