John Carpenter's The Ward - Opening CreditsThe system is broken. The shards cut deep. In clever shadow play, the title type is the very thing you pass in the darkness that makes your blood run cold.
For a variety of reasons we decided to close shop and move on to new things. She, in turn, invited us to pitch for the job. I have to admit I was a little intimidated because I was meeting one of my favorite directors from my childhood!
John Carpenter was a really fun and nice man during our pitch meeting, but before we started talking about ideas, he enlisted me to be a part of a small prank that he wanted to pull on a producer who was running late to the meeting.
Carpenter told me a line to say to the producer when he arrived. As we waited and chatted, Mr. Carpenter frequently interrupted to get me to practice the line, and gave me acting notes to help me make it sound more convincing.
When the producer arrived, we all shook hands, introduced ourselves, and I said my line: "I really want to thank you for doubling the budget of this sequence!
I guess I should just stick to design and not venture into acting! First, we were given the script to read and told that Carpenter was interested in creating a sequence that showed images of the brutal treatment of the mentally ill throughout history.
The main purpose of the sequence was to create a sense of dread of the place that the film takes place in. It was intended to make the audience feel disconcerted and apprehensive of what they are about to witness.
We quickly came up with the idea that ended up on screen, but of course had no idea how on earth we'd be able to pull it off — it was quite ambitious!
We created some initial styleframes that demonstrated the breaking glass concept. This allowed us to do a little initial exploration with developing computer-simulated glass.
We then pitched the concept, and soon found out that Mr. Carpenter was interested in pursuing what we proposed. We then started the very long, involved process of creating the sequence.
There were two significant hurdles that we had to overcome: first, creating photo-realistic, slow motion shattering glass, and them embedding images onto that glass; second, we had to research, acquire or create the images that would eventually appear on the glass.
This all had to be done with a very limited budget, but we had a generous amount of production time. That made all the difference.
Stringer's office, which has each of the girls' names, including Kristen herself. Stringer, catching her in his office, reveals that Kristen is actually one of many personalities of the real Alice Hudson, who was kidnapped at age eleven, eight years earlier, and left chained for two months in the basement of the same farmhouse Kristen burned down.
In order to survive the trauma, she developed multiple personality disorder , creating each one of the girls from the ward as a different personality.
Over time, Alice's own personality became so overwhelmed by the others that she became lost. Stringer attempted experimental techniques to bring Alice's own personality back, resulting in the manifestation of Ghost Alice, who destroyed the individual personalities one by one.
Her treatments were working until 'Kristen' appeared, yet another invention of Alice's mind to protect herself from reliving the trauma at the farmhouse.
At the end of the movie, Alice packs a suitcase with her belonging as she prepares to leave the hospital. When she opens the medicine cabinet above her sink, Kristen lunges out at her.
The film marks a return for Carpenter after a ten-year hiatus of not making any films; his last was the film Ghosts of Mars.
I had fallen out of love with cinematic storytelling". Carpenter said that the series reminded him of why he fell in love with the craft in the first place.
The Ward received poor reviews. The site's consensus states: "Lacking the hallmarks of his best work, The Ward proves to be a disappointingly mundane swan song for director John Carpenter.
Dennis Harvey of Variety wrote, "As usual Carpenter uses the widescreen frame with aplomb, but pic suffers from too little character detailing even if a late twist explains that , rote scares, and emphasis on a hectic pace over atmosphere.
Horror fans have seen it all before. Jeannette Catsoulis of The New York Times wrote that the film "continues the painful decline of a director who seems more nostalgic for past glories than excited about new ideas".
