The prospect of seeing these amazing creatures made us forget all about our aches and pains. It was a three-hour drive from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan, and although our cheerful driver pointed out many landmarks along the way, my mind kept wandering.

Those that have been kept captive or been disturbed by logging activities are brought to Sepilok to be monitored and to be taught the necessary skills before being returned to the wild.
One of the highlights of our trip was watching the twice-daily feeding sessions, when the orang-utans come to a platform to enjoy milk and bananas.
Visiting the sanctuary was a heart- warming - and somewhat comical - experience. Arriving at the centre, I found myself being filmed and photographed by all and sundry - well, I suppose I do bear a certain resemblance to the great beasts.
My 50in chest, big neck, large head and bushy beard also make me a great contender for the fabled Yeti.
