The death of millions of his own citizens and total control of the state! Great screenplay about a dark history in this country that is threatening to repeat itself but with a different "enemy" of the State.
Having grown up in the 50's and 60's I was aware of the "red scare" and the blacklists and knew some of the names of those who were targeted.
I didn't, however, know all of the details that were in this movie. But, over and above the fascinating, and sad, historical events, I thought the casting and acting was stellar, especially Brian Cranston's playing of Dalton Trumbo.
Spot on, as usual for him. A must see. The movie portrays the life not only of Dalton Trumbo but also that of his family during and after the government's commie witch hunts of the late forties and fifties.
What the government did to its citizens is an outrage. I am not a political person. I'm just a person with common sense and a clear sense of right and wrong.
In our world of today we see the same thing happening again but on a much grander scale. Its called political correctness.
For those of us who don't subscribe to it, we are watching the swine blindly rush over the cliff's edge. Even though the events of Dalton Trumbo's life and ordeal took place many, many decades ago let not the lessons of that time go unheeded.
Everyone needs to watch Trumbo. More often than not I watch movies for entertainment only. Trumbo is one of those rare movies that not only entertains but informs.
Trumbo was at the center of one of Hollyweird's darkest hours, make that decades. Trumbo was one of the Hollywood 10, writers and actors blacklisted as Communists.
This isn't any ordinary movie. Even more, close to 60 years later, it shows the power that Hollywood yields - for better or worse.
Cranston's acting is no less than phenomenal. He does what any actor worth their salt wishes they could do, make you forget who THEY are all make you believe who they portray.

No one could do this better as he portrays Dalton Trumbo one of Hollywood's greatest screenwriters. I loved every minute of the film and it's hilarious as he survives the blacklist period of his career writing cheap low budget scripts.
Great film and one of the best I've seen in years. Hard to believe the blacklist happened, and how much it hurt writers and actors at that time.

Trumbo is a fine film telling an interesting story about a difficult time in American history told with the right balance of humour and seriousness the topic deserves.
There's also a fine turn by Helen Mirren as Hedda Hopper, who is the main villain of the piece. But there are good performances from all levels of the cast.
I particularly liked Michael Stuhlbarg's turn as Edward G. Robinson who is used to demonstrate that whilst writers could still work anonymously despite being on the blacklist it was harder for actors who were their work.
Worth watching. The book it is based on is worth reading too, especially as it has a little more detail on how the speech Trumbo makes at the end of the film was received.
This is one of the best films I've ever seen concerning artistic survival in the troubled Mcarthyist era of America.

Trumbo's tenacity and triumphs would eventually help overturn the Fascistic approach of the US Govt. A very telling portrayal of actor Edward G Robinson, who although a friend and Communist affiliate of Trumbo's was forced Judas like to renounce him in public in order to stay in work.
And an excellent portrayal exposing the red neck actor John Wayne too, and his part in these events, as head of the pro-American activities bureau.
Very engaging and rewatchable film and a valuable historical document. Nicely made political drama.
Acting is superb for the most part with suspension of disbelief needed regarding portrayal of well know actors of the era played by actors who frankly look and sound nothing like their characters, more caricature than character.
Having said that the story lifts the lid on the McCarthy witch hunt among the film industry of the day with forensic skill.
